The town’s silk industry is being celebrated in a television documentary this week.

Conservative minister turned broadcaster Michael Portillo headed to Macclesfield for his BBC series Great British Railway Journeys, filming at Adamley silk mill in Langley and neighbouring project Doe Meadow, which has a Silk Gardens exhibition demonstrating the journey of silk from China to Macclesfield.

Chris Studds, who runs the exhibition at Doe Meadow with wife Sara Rodway, said: “Michael Portillo and the camera crew visited Macclesfield one Saturday in May when the sun was shining. They used outside shots of our mill here at Doe Meadow and then went into Adamley textiles to film the silk screen printing. He kindly had a look inside the Silk Gardens but these will not feature in the programme.

“The producer said the gardens needed a programme all to themselves. Sara was in charge of the chickens to make sure they behaved and kept in shot as Michael walked down the length of the mill.”

Great British Railway Journeys is on BBC2 on Friday, January 8, 6.30pm.
