BIG plans to extend Sainsbury's and create 60 jobs were on show for shoppers at the Alderley Road store.

Employees were on hand to answer questions on Friday (September 11) about plans to create an extra 10,000sq ft of space before the company lodges an official planning application.

Bosses say they will mull over customers' ideas before handing over its official proposals to Cheshire East Council.

Christian Wakelin, regional development surveyor for store extensions, said: "The public exhibition was held in the Wilmslow store on Friday, and the feedback from customers was really positive. It's clear that people like shopping at the store and understand why we would like to improve the customer offer. A number of helpful comments were received about the details of the plans, and we will consider how we can address these before a planning application is made. The exhibition will remain in store for two more weeks."

The supermarket giant announced at the start of September that it was hoping to gut the existing first floor and open it to shoppers with a cafe as the focal point - and a new exit and entrance.

Up to 60 full and part-time jobs could be on offer, which the firm hopes to fill from the "local community".

Speaking earlier this month, Christian said: "The Wilmslow store is extremely popular and can become very busy at peak times. The extension could create up to 60 new jobs, of which most would be recruited from the local community."

He added: "These proposals are aimed at improving the shopping experience for existing customers. The entrance lobby can become cramped and improvements to this area should improve the ease of getting in and out of the store for customers."
