CHRISTIANS across the district joined together last week to mark Easter - and one clergyman drove the message of the celebration home by eating a daffodil!

Members of the congregation at St John’s in Lindow looked on in disbelief during the Easter Sunday service when the Reverend Simon Gales unexpectedly ate the spring flower.

While some mused he might have missed his breakfast that morning, Mr Gales explained he was giving a visual demonstration of the importance of having witnesses to validate an otherwise unbelievable incident.

According to the gospel and the testament of the disciples, Jesus was seen, heard, touched and even seen eating by significantly more witnesses than those who saw the vicar eat a daffodil.

The atmosphere was more solemn on Good Friday with services throughout the district.

At Alderley Edge Methodist Church members of the congregation were handed a nail as they entered the building as a reminder of the pain Jesus endured. The group then faced the bitter cold to follow a silent procession through the village, remembering the stations of the cross and the different scenes of Jesus’ sufferings and death, to St Philip’s church where the second part of the service was held.
