A quantum physicist has devised a formula for the best roads in Britain - which includes the A535 from Holmes Chapel to Alderley Edge.
The drive through the Dane River valley which takes you past the 90-metre Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank was named the third best.
Top was the scenic A591 from Kendal to Keswick, a spectacular 30-mile stretch in the Lake District features winds through stunning views of Lakeland fells and the banks of Windermere and Thirlmere.
Ranked second in Britain’s roads is the B3515, which runs from Cheddar to Ashwick, featuring 14 miles of glorious Somerset countryside, with cliff faces rising either side of the as it twists and turns through the gorge.
Dr Mark Hadley’s calculation factored in bends, acceleration, speed and braking in cars including a Porsche, a Jaguar and a Mercedes.
Dr Hadley, of Warwick University, devised the formula for the car rental company Avis to solve a long-running debate among car club enthusiasts on finding Britain’s best driving road.
He said: “There are four key phases of a drive, bends, acceleration, cruising and braking.
“A great driving road strikes just the right balance between the phases so you get the exhilaration of speed and acceleration, while corners test your driving capabilities and long stretches allow you to enjoy the scenery.”
The A535 begins its journey in the centre of Holmes Chapel where it is initially known as Macclesfield Road. It heads east then northeastwards crossing the Crewe to Manchester branch of the West Coast Main Line. It passes the village of Twemlow Green, running alongside the Twemlow Viaduct before passing Jodrell Bank.
Traffic to and from Macclesfield joins the A535 here at Farm Lane, Lower Withington.
The A535 then passes through Withington Green and Farm Wood Quarry, Astle Hall and into Chelford.
It then passes under the Crewe to Manchester line at Corbishley Bridge, and continues across the A34 into the village of Alderley Edge.
Mark Servodidio, boss of Avis UK, said: ”Like so many fellow motoring enthusiasts, we’ve been debating which is the world’s best driving road probably since the day we were founded in 1946.
“Through our ratio we finally have a definitive answer.”
