Well-known Wilmslow hairdresser Stephen Peel is on a roll. The 52-year-old, who once ran the London marathon as a currant bun, has stepped it up a gear and now hopes to tackle the Bupa Great Manchester Run dressed as Sid the Sausage Roll on Sunday, May 16.

He will then jet off to complete a mammoth 100km (62 miles) challenge across Europe to support the NSPCC’s Hear Our Cry campaign.

Stephen, a divorced dad-of-two, of Grey Street, in Stalybridge, will join a team that will be running 10 10-kilometre races in 10 countries over five days.

The mobile hairdresser, who works in the Wilmslow and Hale area, began training just six weeks ago after his friend was forced to pull out due to an injury.

The experienced marathon runner only got back into his stride just three months ago.

He decided to run as the savoury snack for the Manchester leg after getting sponsorship from the bakery, Greggs, and hopes to run in the outfit for the other nine races.

Stephen said: “You do one race in the morning and then travel through the country and do one at night.

“It’s going to be hard work and it’s going to be very hot as well.

“I would hope to complete it in an hour and 10 minutes, as Sid, maybe two hours.”

The Hear Our Cry campaign has been launched to raise awareness of the NSPCC’s vital helpline services and allow the charity to support more children.

Throughout 2008/2009, the ChildLine service counselled over one million calls from children – the equivalent of over 13 capacity crowds at Old Trafford or 33,000 classrooms full of children.

The charity aims to raise £2.7m in Greater Manchester.
