STUDENTS at Poynton High School are celebrating their best ever A-level results - with a third of all grades at A or A*.

A staggering 11 percent of all grades were A* at the Yew Tree Lane school.

Leading by example was Rebekah Young who scored straight A8 grades in biology, chemistry, mathematics and further mathematics. She is off to read medicine at Newcastle University.

Talented number-crunchers Lee Tomlinson and Alex Woodboth did well and well study at Cambridge and Oxford respectively. Lee achieved two A* and one A and will study maths, while Alex, who will combined maths with with philosophy after clocking up three A* and one A.

Other success stories include Adam Costello who got three A and a C. He turned down a range of offers from university to take up an internship with Barclays Bank following his placement as part of the school’s Careers Academy UK programme.

Poynton led the way with an increase in science success among the girls. Zoe Byron is off to read chemistry at Nottingham University and Katie Hampton is to read physics at Birmingham after both achieving an A8 and two As.

Headteacher David Waugh said: "We are so very proud of all of our students for their success this year.

"These results represent the schools’ best ever A-level grades on the back of continuous year on year improvement over the last three years. "With a third of all A-levels being graded as A or A* it represents real life changing opportunities for our students.

"We have students now going off to study at both Oxbridge universities, to study medicine, law and a vast range of other truly inspiring university courses.

"As importantly, our average grade for each A-level qualification has risen by a third also, in other words, every student has on average scored a third of a grade higher in every subject than in the previous year.

"This is the culmination of many thousands of hours of hard work by our students and staff and I would like to wish all of our students the very best of luck as they move on to the next exciting chapter of their lives. Well done class of 2014!”
