MAJOR engineering work will disrupt train services from Macclesfield to London and Manchester over the next three weekends.

And railways bosses have warned any football fans planning to attend the England international match at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 7 - that reduced services will make rail travel impossible for many.

The extensive engineering work will prevent the running of services and since trains to and from Manchester are likely to be over subscribed, no journeys can be guaranteed.

A National Rail spokesman said: "All fans attending the match are strongly advised to avoid travelling on Virgin Trains and to make alternative arrangements.

"Those who have bought rail tickets without securing a seat reservation are advised to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund."

Network Rail's improvements to the West Coast Main Line will seriously affect Virgin Train services between Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester Piccadilly, the West Midlands and London Euston on September 30, October 1, October 7 and 8, and October 14 and 15.

The work is needed to allow for Virgin's planned timetable and seating capacity changes from 2009.
