I have no doubts about climate change.

The earth’s temperature is rising but whether it’s the result of Co2 emissions or natural phenomenon I don’t really know. I do know it’s a Godsend to politicians intent on raising taxation. Complaining about a green levy is like spitting in church. Just how much of the subsequent revenue actually goes to combat climate change no one knows. It is the perfect tax.

Observing the behaviour of those urging us to reduce our carbon footprint only increases my dilemma. About the time I became convinced that video conferencing and limited foreign travel was the way to go 30,000 climate change delegates descended on Copenhagen. Over the next couple of weeks they generated an estimated 41,000 tons of Co2 (about the same as Malawi).

Gordon Brown hired a 185 seat Airbus for his team of 20, while Prince Charles travelled by private jet which suggests they don’t actually believe what they preach.

And in the midst of all this frantic concern for the ozone layer the Government approved a third runway for Heathrow with the amazing comment that it will have ‘no significant effect’. Closer to home we have Cheshire East boasting of its eco friendly endeavours while the mayor swans around in a £150K gas guzzler.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong here, but aren’t leaders by definition the ones who set the standard? Marketing companies spend billions persuading pop stars, politicians and socialites to use their products and services knowing the masses will follow. Consciously or not we do follow the example set from above.

So yes, I’m prepared to drive a Bentley or jet around the globe like our leaders. When I see Bono, Sting, Tony Blair, etc travelling around in a National Express coach I’ll believe the depth of their concern and do likewise. In the meantime spare us the hypocrisy
