A teenage Brownie leader from Poynton has been given the charity’s highest accolade.

Rebecca Dyson, 19, has worked her way up to be a leader at the 1st Poynton Brownies.

Now her dedication has been recognised at special ceremony in the House of Lords.

Rebecca has achieved the Queen’s Guide Award, a development programme for young women to develop their leadership skills.

Only a handful are leaders are presented the accolade each year.

The former Poynton High School pupil, who is currently studying at Lancaster University, said: “I was able to do so much I wouldn’t have been able to do – I’m now much more confident in my leadership abilities.”

Among the tasks Rebecca tackled were staging an exploration trip to Keswick, helping at Girlguiding’s centenary camp – and husky sledging and ice fishing on a guiding trip to Lapland.

Rebecca received her award from Baroness Caroline Cox and chief guide Gill Slocombe.

Gill said: “The Queen’s Guide Award embodies all that’s best about guiding. The adventures that recipients experience, the skills they learn and the friendships and confidence they build will last a lifetime – and prove immensely valuable as they pursue their goals in life.

“This challenge has helped them become confident, skilled, self-reliant young women ready to make a positive difference to the world around them, and I have no doubt that they will.”

Baroness Cox added: “The Queen’s Guides are a real inspiration and I’m sure we can expect great things of them.

“It would not surprise me if these young women go on to make up our future generation of strong female leaders in the UK.”
