Three postboxes in Disley and Poynton have been painted gold to honour Paralympic cycling superstars Sarah and Barney Storey.

Sarah, 34, from Disley, stormed the Olympic Velodrome to claim Team GB’s first gold of the games, winning the C5 3,000 metres individual pursuit, and another in the C4/5 500 metres time-trial.

And Barney, 35, won his third gold medal riding tandem pilot with Neil Fachie in the 1k time trial. But unlike our Olympic star Ben Ainslie, when Royal Mail chose to decorate a postbox in Cornwall rather than his Macclesfield birthplace, Sarah and Barney were invited to pick their spot. Sarah’s two boxes – one for each gold – are outside the White Lion pub on Buxton Road and outside her old high school in Poynton, while Barney’s is on Market Street, Disley.

David Kidd, chairman of Disley Parish Council, said: "It’s splendid news for the village, we’ve got two members of the our community who have done brilliantly, with a world record and three medals so far. There are a few more races to come – we could have more gold postboxes than red ones in Disley."

The couple’s golden performances are also marked with Royal Mail stamps which villagers can buy in the post office on Market Street before they go on sale across the country.

Also celebrating medals are siblings Libby and James Clegg, from Bollington. Libby, 22, won silver in the women’s 100m sprint and James, 18, won bronze in the 100m butterfly S12.

Local actress Caroline Parker, who is deaf, had a chance to shine at the Games’ opening ceremony. She signed ‘I am what I am’ alongside singer Beverley Knight in front of 70 million viewers. See next week’s Express for her exclusive story.
