Around 120 people took part in the first ever Midsummer Pop Up Parade in Macclesfield Market Place on Saturday.
The event, an offshoot of the popular arts and culture Barnaby Festival, was organised by volunteers from Macclesfield Community ArtSpace.
Participants were then invited to personalise umbrellas for the colourful parade through the pedestrianised streets, complete with a samba band.
Both live and recorded music accompanied people hard at work in gazebos making costumes, headgear, masks and shakers and decorating their umbrellas.
There will be no biennial Barnaby Festival this year, but it will return in 2016.
Organisers, having anticipated the unseasonal summer weather, handed out ‘special secret items’ during the morning which turned out to be umbrellas.
Gail Smith, from Macclesfield Community ArtSpace, said: “We were terrified, especially with the bad weather, as it was the first time we have ever done the pop-up parade but there were plenty of Macclesfield folk who weren’t prepared to let the weather dampen their spirits.”
