Orange bikes will decorate the borough to herald the arrival of the cycle Tour of Britain.

The cycling competition, which attracts thousands of spectators and is broadcast across the world, will see dozens of elite cyclists whizz through the borough to the finishing line at Tatton Park on Tuesday, September 6.

Following a successful bid by Cheshire East Council, the eight-day tour will pass through the borough on stage three of the event, with cyclists heading along the Silk Road and up the Cat and Fiddle, and through Bollington, Prestbury, Chelford and Siddington.

The council has arranged for bright orange bicycles to decorate the Cheshire leg of the route, with 160 unwanted bikes donated by waste company HW Martin Waste, which otherwise would have been scrapped.

Cheshire East Council deputy leader David Brown said: “After Chris Froome’s magnificent win at the Tour de France, interest in cycling has really taken off and the forthcoming Olympics are certain to add to this.

“Bringing the Tour of Britain here gives us a fantastic opportunity to show off Cheshire East to the wider world.

“It is also a unique opportunity for local businesses to not only take part in the excitement around this historic event, but also to promote themselves to a huge and diverse audience.”

Stage three of the tour follows a course from Congleton to Tatton Park in Knutsford over a distance of 111 miles.

Although there are no guarantees when the riders will pass through the town, the convoy is expected to arrive in the Macclesfield area from around 1.30pm.

Riders will travel from Over Alderley along Macclesfield Road and Chelford Road, through Prestbury village and up through Bollington and Pott Shrigley.

From here riders will head over the tops of the Bakestone Dale Road and are expected to reach Rainow by about 2pm.

Cyclists will then head back down towards Macclesfield, cycle along part of the Silk Road before heading up the Cat and Fiddle at about 2.30pm.

The route then takes riders through Siddington and Chelford, arriving about 3pm, before heading back to the finishing line at Tatton Park.
