A notorious crime-ridden underpass will be transformed into a pop-up living room this weekend.
The underpass at Waters Green has been plagued by street attacks, drug taking and antisocial behaviour in recent years.
But on Friday, January 22 from 11.30am to 3.30pm, art collective Glassball are inviting residents to sit down with them on the walkway and share their stories of the town, some of which could then be represented in a piece of public art for the walkway.
The thoroughfare will be decked out with chairs, a rug, lamp and table, thanks to the backing of furniture store Arighi Bianchi and Cheshire East Council.
Coun Sam Gardner, cabinet member in charge of open spaces, said: “This is a great opportunity for the people of Macclesfield to influence what will be a dramatic piece of public art that will transform a rather cold and uninviting subway, plagued by anti-social behaviour in the past, into something of great local interest and visually striking.”
Cora Glasser from Glassball said: “We aim to capture anecdotes and stories about Macclesfield as well as consult people about our ideas for artwork for the underpass.”
