Parish councillors debated the state of Alderley Edge’s nightlife at their latest meeting.

Coun Mary Maczkowiak warned members that the village was ‘going downhill quicker than people realise’.

Other councillors spoke of concerns about streets littered with cigarette ends, illegal parking, noisy revellers and booze-fuelled bad behaviour.

The council has previously complained of a proliferation of bars on London Road.

Coun Maczkowiak, who has lived in the village for 55 years, said: “The village is not a nice place to be at night.

“This village is going downhill quicker than people realise.

“One evening there was a group of young people on Heyes Lane and as I drove past two of them urinated on my car.”

But Coun Matthew Lloyd, acting chairman of the council, said: “You say it’s not a nice place to be but if there aren’t the bars and restaurants we would have a lot more empty premises. We can’t hold back the tide.

“There are many villages really struggling, but we’re looking vibrant. I don’t think we should bite the hand that feeds us.”

Coun Melanie Connor said there was a ‘fine line’ to balance.

She said: “We don’t have empty shops, not like Wilmslow. Wilmslow at night is awful.”

Coun Frank Keegan complained about cigarette ends being left in the street.

He said: “These people should clean up after themselves.

“We should write saying if they don’t clean up we will send a PCSO out at night to fine people who throw a cigarette end.”
