A MOTHER-of-two has launched a traffic calming campaign after her six-year-old son was knocked off his new bike outside his home.

Nathan Haigh was wearing a helmet and was riding his red and black pedal cycle, fitted with stabilisers, on Delamere Drive, Macclesfield, at 5.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

This week he was nursing cuts and bruises to his arms, legs, back and head after he collided with a car which crushed the back of his pushbike.

His frantic mum, Simone, ran into the street and took Nathan to Macclesfield Hospital after the accident where he was treated for cuts, bruises and grazing.

She has now pledged to launch a campaign highlighting what she sees as an urgent need for traffic calming on the road.

"This has been an accident waiting to happen," Simone said. "Since humps were put along Hulley Road, cars speed along here using it as a cut-through to the Hurdsfield Industrial Estate.

"The speed limit is 30mph, but traffic goes through here so much faster than that and it should be reduced to 20mph."

Nathan, who attends Beech Hall School, now wears bandages on his right arm, ribs and leg.

Simone, who is married with a 16-year-old daughter, is thankful the injuries were not more severe.

"We're really lucky he wasn't killed and I'm just glad I made sure he wore a helmet," she said.

"He'd only been out for five minutes and it was the only day I wasn't out with him since the start of the school holidays.

"But no parent can watch their child 24 hours a day and wrap them in cotton wool, and he wasn't the only kid out there."

Simone and her neighbours will now start collecting signatures on a petition to Cheshire County Council demanding humps or a lower speed limit on Delamere Drive.

A council spokeswoman said: "Areas showing a volume of accidents are investigated and monitored and safety measures implemented where necessary.

"However, due to a limited budget, Cheshire County Council must prioritise schemes.

"We welcome any member of the public wishing to highlight an area they perceive to be problematic."

The motorist involved remained on the scene, and a traffic police spokesman confirmed that no arrests had been made.
