A Prestbury road, which is home to footballers as well as top executives, has again been named the most expensive in the north of England.

Withinlee Road was the top northern address in a list of Britain’s priciest places to live.

The top 10 streets in the list, released by the bank Lloyds TSB, were all in the London area.

But Withinlee Road, close to the border with Mottram St Andrew, was named as the most expensive in the north with properties on the leafy stretch costing as much as £1.65m.

Residents on the road, which boasts rows of individually named houses, value their privacy with many reluctant to talk about what it’s like to live on such an affluent street. But some claimed it was new arrivals, including footballers, building modern mansions who were driving up the average price.

One woman, who lives in a 1920s-built cottage and whose family have lived in the area for decades said: "It used to be a very quiet, country road, but it has changed quite a bit what with all the footballers moving in."

Another man described Withinlee Road’s title as the poshest in the north an ‘anomaly’ because of a handful of extravagant mansions built by newcomers.

Prestbury, along with neighbouring Mottram St Andrew, has long been regarded as the north west’s ‘Millionaire’s Row’ due to the number of rich and famous living there.

Some residents admitted this had lead to security fears.

One man, who didn’t want to be named, pointed to a spate of recent burglaries in the area as a cause for concern. But Eilidh Cornish, 19, a student at Leeds University who had returned to to visit her at their large, modern, five-bedroom house, said she never felt unsafe on the road.

She said: "It’s really quiet and really nice round here.

"It’s also really convenient for getting to places."

She also said a private security van sometimes patrolled the area.

There are now 54 houses on the road with larger, more modern designs replacing older, traditional cottages.

You also don't have to travel far to reach the north’s second most expensive street. Macclesfield Road in Alderley Edge was the next priciest street with will properties costing an average of £1.32m while prices Torkington Road in Wilmslow topped £1.28m.
