MARGARET Nuttall thought she was going out for a meal to celebrate her birthday.

Little did she know what was in store for her.

Margaret, 79, was out with her family at the Conservative Club when MP Nicholas Winterton appeared and presented her with a certificate of merit.

The Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Service to the Community is to mark the United Nations Year of the Volunteer 2001.

Margaret's good deeds include being a Samaritan for 24 years.

Twice a month she goes to Macclesfield Hospital to take people down to the hospital chapel service.

She also looks after a lady with learning difficulties once a week.
