A teenage cellist has been chosen to play with a prestigious youth orchestra.

Fifteen-year-old Joshua Mock, who is a student at All Hallows Catholic College, has been awarded a place with the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) of Great Britain next year.

Joshua, who has played the cello for eight years and practises for three hours every day, said: “I’m really excited to be part of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain because it will be the next step up for my playing.

“I didn’t expect to get through because people don’t usually get in on their first time. We saw it as a bit of a practice. I feel very proud of myself.”

Joshua, whose ambition is to become a conductor, was among 750 young musicians to audition for the orchestra, and is one of just 163 who were chosen to perform.

The first performance will be at Leeds Town Hall on January 2, and the Barbican Centre in London on January 3, when Joshua’s mum and dad Ruth and Dave will be in the audience.

Joshua said: “The NYO plays in some of the best concert venues in the UK, and it’s really amazing that I’ll be playing on the same stages as world famous symphony orchestras.”
