The husband of Leanne McKie, whose body was found in a lake in Poynton, has been charged with her murder.

The mum-of-three, 39, a serving officer from Wilmslow, was found dead in Poynton Park on Friday.

Darren McKie, 43, of Burford Close, Wilmslow, is due to appear at South and East Cheshire Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

In a statement Cheshire Police said: “A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman from Poynton.

“Darren McKie, 43, from Burford Close, Wilmslow, was arrested in the early hours of Friday 29 September after the body of Leanne McKie, 39, was found in a lake at Poynton Park.

“He was subsequently charged with murder today (Monday 2 October) and has been remanded in police custody to appear at South and East Cheshire Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, Tuesday, October 3, 2017.”

DC Leanne McKie worked as a detective constable in Greater Manchester Police's serious sexual offences unit. GMP Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said she joined the force in 2001.

In a tribute he said: “My heart particularly goes out to her three young children, who she adored. Leanne worked tirelessly to provide support and seek justice for victims of sexual crimes.”

Police were first called at around 3.45am on Friday to reports a body had been found in the lake at Poynton Park.
