A 40ft shipping container dropped in the centre of Macclesfield has attracted hundreds of visitors.

The pop-up art exhibition - which houses a miniature depiction of a post-riot landscape viewed through spy-holes – took up residence in Exchange Square car park thanks to a successful crowd-funding appeal.

It’s been created by artist and former KLF star Jimmy Cauty, and is touring the UK as part of the ‘ADP Riot Tour’.

It was officially opened with a bottle of RedWillow beer by Mayor of Macclesfield Coun Alift Harewood, with artist Jimmy also welcoming the crowd. Macclesfield Artspace drummers performed using old white goods, which represented the mechanisation of society which incensed Macclesfield rioters of 1812. A pamphlet written by local poet Ailsa Holland was also distributed telling the history.

Organiser Jane Munro, said: “This has been a really fantastic collaboration, with everyone getting behind us from the Council Highways and Car Parks division, to volunteers young and old who have given their time and resources freely, and in such high spirits.

“The level of response has been amazing. I think it’s been a hugely positive addition to the town and a great way to celebrate our history.”
