Swing boats that were first enjoyed by children 130 years ago were a main attraction at a Quarry Bank Mill event.

The ride – built in 1880 – drew big queues outside the National Trust property, which was celebrating its annual Victorian May Day with thousands of visitors.

Pupils from Styal Primary School danced around a Maypole and visitors dressed as a character from Quarry Bank’s past. Arthur Price, owner of the Great British Fun Fair, which supplied the swings, said:  “It’s not the thrill of the ride, but the tradition of it that makes it popular.

“It’s something the older generation might have enjoyed when they were young and now they can enjoy it with their children and their grandchildren.”

The scarecrow festival is coming up at Quarry Bank Mill.
