Around 300 people took part in a walk to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo on Sunday.

The monument was built in 1817 overlooking Kerridge and Bollington to mark the Duke of Wellington’s victory on June 18, 1815.

Families and children enjoyed a traditional picnic after the 2km trek, which set off from Bollington Recreation Ground and made its way up to White Nancy.

They were entertained by the Bollington Brass Band and the Bollington Samba Band as they tucked in to tasty pizzas, ice-cream and cupcakes.

Participants also saw the new design of soldiers in silhouette on the monument, painted by Amy Needham, a 19-year-old Manchester University art student.

Cheshire East Councillor Amanda Stott, who represents the Bollington ward, said: “It was a real family event with kids rolling down the hills and not a Playstation in site! Amy’s design was the most effective as not everyone can get to the monument and her soldiers can easily be seen from below.

“They’re not soldiers in combat, just standing shoulder to shoulder, just human beings all involved in battle.”
