Macclesfield Town FC have almost £39,000 to spend on new players thanks to a fundraising appeal by fans.

A mystery overseas fan gifted the club £15,000 in August for manager John Askey to spend on new signings.

But in a bid to galvanise supporters the anonymous donor offered to match pound for pound any cash raised by supporters up to £10,000 before November 10, the day Macc take on Altrincham at the Moss Rose.

The £10k Dash campaign was launched by Support Our Silkmen, a group of super-fans, backed by the Silkmen Supporters Trust, which raises funds for the club.

In just over a month fans pledged online, through cheques and cash collected at games raising £11,000.

And in an exciting twist the mysterious donor has now offered the club another £3,000 in January,

This means John Askey has £39,000 to spend on bolstering his squad.

Tony Brown, from Support Our Silkmen, said the reaction to the campaign had been brilliant.

He added: “We had dozens of fans from all over the world digging deep to help the campaign.

“I always hoped we would reach the target but to actually do it is brilliant. We had people throwing in change at home matches, and cheques for hundreds of pounds being sent in.

“I’ve been clear from the start but every penny is held by SST for the manager to spend on players.”

The campaign was supported by John Askey and club chairman Mark Blower.

Speaking of the wind fall Mr Askey praised fans of the Silkmen for their help.

He said: “This has really shown that fans are behind the club.

“Players, managers, owners, come and go, but the fans stay, and once again when they were called upon they have really shown their support.

Mr Askey has already spent some of the cash bringing in forward Reece Styche, the Gibraltar international who has also represented England C team. He has pledged not to waste the remainder.

He said: “At the moment we have a great squad who are all performing and we need to push on into the play-off positions.

“It’s great to know if we suffer injuries and need to bolster the team we can, but I don’t plan to simply spend it for the sake of it. I might even hold onto it for next season.”
