A family of gin makers are excited to appear on popular Sunday night TV show Countryfile.

Karl and Lindsay Bond, with their daughter Hattie, make Forest Gin from their home in Langley using berries and botanicals foraged in Macclesfield Forest.

The family have been careful to keep a premium on their brand, supplying high-end restaurants and bars and department store Harvey Nichols. They scooped a silver medal in the ‘ultra premium’ category at festival The Global Gin Masters.

Now producers at BBC’s popular Countryfile have spotted the family’s new venture and paid them a visit to feature in a programme.

Karl said: “The BBC approached us and although we were reluctant to appear on camera, the opportunity was just too good to turn down.

“The Countryfile team were so friendly and were great company on the day, so that really put us at ease. For a small, local business such as Forest Gin, the national exposure that this gives us is incredible. We are already pre-sold out to the local outlets for Christmas, so our next challenge is to keep up with demand.

“We are still on the lookout for premises close to the Forest so we ask anyone with an old barn or outbuilding in Sutton or Langley to get in touch.”

Countryfile presenter Helen Skelton spent the day with the Bond family to see how they forage and distil Forest Gin. The morning was spent in and around Teggs Nose Country Park, where the family showed the presenter how they forage for berries, moss and fern. The cameras filmed everything, including Helen Skelton picking and tasting the wild bilberries which grow on the slopes of the park every year.

After a quick lunch at the new Teggs Nose cafe, the family invited the cameras into their home, where Karl went through the process of making the gin. This included breaking down the botanicals using as pestle and mortar and then distilling the product in their own still. The final scenes in the episode will show Helen tasting the gin, along with her reaction to its taste.

Chief forager Hattie, seven, said she loved the experience and added: “Helen was so lovely and really normal. I was amazed by how many times they have to film the same thing to get it right. I can’t wait to see it on the TV now.”

The episode will be shown on BBC1 on Sunday, October 11.
