A BRAVE Macclesfield student who scored exam success just weeks after vital brain surgery has been honoured for her outstanding achievement.

Janette Broadbent, 18, who sat her A-Levels shortly after a four-and-a-half hour operation to remove a tumour, was presented with the Jenny Sykes Memorial Award for Overcoming Adversity by Tytherington High School.

The determined teenager, who is now studying nursery science at Nottingham Trent University, scored an A and 2 Bs in Social Care, Biology and PE despite her debilitating condition.

Janette suffered extreme hearing loss earlier last year before medics discovered she had a problem with the cochlea in her inner left ear, and later discovered the tumour during surgery last October.

Surgeons successfully operated on the tumour the following March just weeks before Janette's exams were to begin.

The brave teenager and her parents were overjoyed to learn she had passed.

Other stars who were recognised on the night were Jonathan Davies, who gained 11 A-star grades at GCSE and Benita Juszkiewicz, who gained superb A-Level results.

Both students took home the prestigious Outstanding Academic Achievement awards.

Guests of honour at the big presentation evening last week were Chris and Ruth Spedding, two former Tytherington High School pupils who now have successful careers.

Headteacher Andy Robinson said: "This is one of the highlights of the school year when we celebrate and honour each and every student's achievements. The school motto is 'achievement for all' and it's a pleasure to reward students who have fulfilled their potential."
