HERE we go again. Insufficient places for Wilmslow children who, surprise, surprise, want to attend Wilmslow High School. Apparently this year is expected to be worse than last with a record number of pupils forced to travel to Poynton, Macclesfield, Northwich or Winsford.

Now, there are many unpredictable aspects of modern life: taxation, interest rates, oil prices, Cristiano Ronaldo – but the number of 11-year-olds needing secondary school places isn’t one.

There’s no need to guess at numbers as the vast majority of these children have been in the pipeline for six years.

It’s not like estimating the number of hopefuls turning up to an X-Factor audition.

So, what has Cheshire County Council been doing for the past six years – counting sheep? These are pupils from the Wilmslow area, right?

So where will they want to go to school? (The clue is in the name).

Of course there will be some discrepancy, but it should not present a major problem every September as it does.

Our cat could do the maths.

Hopefully, the new Cheshire East Authority will have more gumption than the now defunct county council – but don’t hold your breath.
