A driver from Wilmslow was arrested after a three-car smash yesterday in which a woman died.

Police and fire crews were called to the crash near the Legh Arms on London Road at around 3.30pm.

It involved a Mitsubishi pick-up, Honda Jazz and Citroen DS3.

Fire crews from Poynton, Macclesfield and Bollington helped paramedics and the ambulance service release injured people from the vehicles.

The driver of the Honda Jazz, a 61-year-old woman from Poynton, died at the scene.

A passenger in the Mitsubishi, a 21-year-old man from Wilmslow, was airlifted to hospital with shoulder and neck injuries.

A 31-year-old woman from Bollington, driving the Citroen, was taken to Macclesfield Hospital by ambulance.

London Road was closed between Poynton and the Legh Arms while emergency services worked at the scene.

The road was reopened by 10.40pm.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 37-year-old man from Wilmslow was arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.
