A woman miraculously avoided injury after her car had its brakes tampered with whilst parked up in Alderley Edge.

Police are now appealing for witnesses after the owner's brakes failed while she was driving.

There was no accident and the woman was unharmed but officers say the consequences could have been devastating.

The incident happened between between 9.15pm on Sunday 25 March 2012 and 1am on Monday 26 March 2012 on the corner of Lynton Lane and Davey Lane.

It is believed brake fluid was drained out of the silver Toyota IQ.

However the woman only discovered this as she travelled home to Altrincham and her brakes failed to work.

It is feared a second car could have been targeted and officers are asking anyone whose vehicle was parked there at the time to get it checked out at a garage.

Sgt Andy Miller from Wilmslow NPU said: "She was not injured and no collision took place as a result, but this could have been much worse.

"This type of behaviour is reckless and could have caused serious harm. We are treating this very seriously and would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw someone acting suspiciously around cars in this vicinity.

He added: "It is possible a second car was also tampered with at the time.

"We would advise that anyone who had parked their cars in this area between Sunday evening and early hours on Monday to get their brakes checked by a garage."

Anyone with information should contact Sgt Miller by calling 101 and quoting incident number 350 of 26 March 2012.
