A drink driver who fled after causing an accident was left red-faced when he arrived home to find the police waiting at his front door.

Sam Naylor was ‘sweating profusely and out of breath’ and had mud all over his clothes when police traced his car to his home address and lay in wait.

Naylor, 32, of Kingston Avenue, Macclesfield, admitted drink driving when he appeared at Macclesfield magistrates’ court.

The court heard he was on his way to buy some cigarettes from a garage when he lost control and crashed into another vehicle on Fence Avenue.

He panicked and ran off, abandoning his car in the middle of the road.

Debbie Byrne, prosecuting, said: “At 1am on July 6 police were alerted to a collision where a car had crashed into parked cars on Fence Avenue.

“Pc Lee found a Vauxhall Astra van blocking one side of the road. It had collided with a black Mercedes causing considerable damage to both vehicles. There was also damage to a Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen van. There was no sign of the driver and the keys were not in the vehicle.

“Police checked the database and tracked the owner to Kingston Avenue.

“At 1.10am police attended the address and while they were there they became aware of a dark figure on the drive. He was sweating profusely and was out of breath. There was also mud all over his trainers and trousers.”

Mrs Byrne said Naylor was suspected of drink driving but refused to be breathalysed and became verbally abusive.

She said: “He was arrested and was eventually breathalysed at the police station recording 56mg, above the 35mg legal limit.

“Police returned to the to look for the car keys and found them near to his house.

“When he was interviewed he told officers that he had been drunk for days on and off.

“He said he decided to drive to the garage in Tytherington for some cigarettes. After the crash he panicked and run back home. He is having a few family issues and wasn’t thinking straight.”

The court heard that Naylor has been convicted of drink driving twice previously, in 2004 and 2011.

John Gallagher, defending, said: “He hit the first car and that shunted into other cars in turn.”

Naylor was banned for 40 months and fined £250.
