A gardening group is encouraging people around Wilmslow to transform the town into a colourful display of edible plants for the Britain in Bloom competition.

Incredible Edible were at the Artisan Market this weekend to promote Wilmslow’s entry into the RHS Britain in Bloom competition this summer.

Schools, businesses, churches and community groups are encouraged to grow fruit, veg and berries in gardens, planters and community plots so Wilmslow is in with a shot.

Judges will come to the town to see how it matches up to others around the region.

Helen Yates, Incredible Edible founder, said: “This is about making the town more colourful and we want as many people to join in as possible.

“Our theme is edible plants to reflect the good work going on with the community plots already.

“We want people to get their outdoor space covered with lovely strawberries, tomatoes and other edible treats.

“This should be a real celebration.”

Planters are already underway at Waitrose, Bank Square, Sainsbury's and Wildings. Wilmslow Town Council has agreed to organise litter picking and fruit-shaped sculptures are planned.

Helen has asked for groups to submit photos to the website and asks for volunteers on the first Sunday of the month. She said:  “People can help us plant or do it in their own time, the more people who take part the more points we get. Join the planting campaign to make Wilmslow bloom.”
