I’m delighted to see Steven Carter return to local politics.  With the Tory council stumbling from one disaster to another, this should have been the moment for the local Labour party to demonstrate real passion.

Instead they’ve whimpered like an ailing puppy.

On April 25, Mr Carter will be the Labour candidate for the Hurdsfield ward, following the departure of Gill Boston, who leaves for a role in a new NHS clinical group.

If Mr Carter will introduce some real bite into the debate, with so many important issues at stake, it can’t come a moment too soon. CEC seem determined to develop green belt for reasons known only to itself. This needs a serious challenge.

I know Steven Carter is a tough character (we’ve crossed swords enough times).

He needs to show that in effective opposition, otherwise our towns and villages are going to be transformed beyond recognition.

One word of advice (if I may). Mr Carter should leave national politics to Westminster and concentrate his efforts on local issues where his actions can make a difference.
