THE MACCLESFIELD Express - the big one for all the local news - is looking for a "reel" story.

We're putting up a trophy for the biggest overall catch in an angling competition organised by police officer Mick Shaw in which 300 youngsters are expected to be taking part.

And we will be reporting the winners - and the whoppers from the event - with up-to-date news.

Sponsored by the local police and companies in the town the match is designed to haul youngsters off the streets and on to the riverbanks where they can enjoy some competitive fun with prizes as the end of it.

They are the ones who will certainly not get away!

Dad-of-four, PC Mick Shaw, is the brains behind the challenge for youngsters to hook the biggest fish on Macclesfield waters and he's cast his net to catch those on the wrong side of the law.

Mick, 46, a bobby for 21 years, said: "I had to attend a domestic the other night and after I'd sorted it out I asked the lad if he liked fishing and he said 'yes' so I gave him an application form."

There are already 120 kids signed up to take part in the Macclesfield heats, which will be held at Sutton Canal and at Poynton Pool with categories of u-17s, u-15s, u-13s and u-11s with the best 75 going through to the grand final at Gawsworth Fisheries, Gawsworth Hall on August 24. The series of heats will take place between August 14 and August 18 with Mick expecting a good haul of bream, carp, perch, roach and "obviously the odd eel".

Those who reel in the overall biggest fish will receive the Macclesfield Express Trophy.

Weston Estate copper Mick who once nabbed a 19lb carp said: "It's great to have the Macclesfield Express on board, they join a list of sponsors who have given so generously."

Costcutters on Earlsway have donated sweets, drinks and crisps, the Millstone on Waters Green and Waters Green Fish Bar have also provided treats for the kids.

Married PC Mick Shaw, said: "This might help break barriers down through fishing we might reduce youth crime and anti social behaviour."

Cops will provide rods and lines, keep nets and other equipment but the amount is limited though, so it will be on a first-come, first-served basis and all entrants will receive a gift just for taking part and there will be a free lunch for everyone.

Winners of the heats will receive trophies or medals and the winners of the different age groups in the final will receive rods, reels and other tackle as prizes.

Anyone who wants to join in can leave their details on the Macclesfield Community Action Team telephone mailbox on 0845 458 6371 and PC Shaw will get back to you.
