Campaigners against a new, larger Tesco store in Macclesfield have sent an open letter to councillors.

Tesco has applied for planning permission to move to a 150,000-sq ft site opposite their current home on Hibel Road.

Now the No To Tesco Extra protesters have sent an eight-page letter to all ward councillors which they hope will influence their views on the controversial plan.

The group claims a new store at the former Barracks Mill would would damage the local economy, drawing people out of the town centre and force independent shops to close.

The letter says: "Tesco has no other interest in any town beyond making a profit. It is accountable to shareholders, not to local communities."

The group hopes to get the application discussed at future council meetings.
