A reservoir is to undergo a £1.5 million improvement project.
Bosley Reservoir will be drained to just 10 percent of its capacity while the work takes place.
Work at the reservoir, popular with birdwatchers and anglers, began on 20 July and is expected to take 22 weeks.
The work will include repairs to the Grade II listed Valve Tunnel, improvement to access for inspection and maintenance teams and repairs to the face of the dam.
The repairs will ensure the reservoir meets current flood risk guidelines.The 35 hectare reservoir holds 1350 million litres of water, enough to fill 540 Olympic sized swimming pools.
The work on the reservoir is being carried out by the Canal & River Trust, the charity that maintains for country’s waterways.
The groups senior project manager Richard Spencer said they would endeavour to keep disruption to the public to a minimum.
He said: “The work being carried out will ensure that the reservoir meets the standards required by the Reservoirs Act and will be able to service the needs of the Macclesfield Canal and the Bosley locks for many years to come.
“We will endeavour to keep disruption to the public footpaths to a minimum while we carry out this essential work.”
