Floodwater washed away newly-planted trees when heavy rain caused the River Bollin to burst its banks.

The trees were planted by the Friends of the Carrs last month after a donation from a conservation charity but volunteers were shocked to see some were lost and others damaged by three feet of flooding at the weekend.

Graham Beech, of Alton Road, who helped with the tree planting, said: "We went out to walk towards Styal and were dismayed to see trees had been washed away and some uprooted.

"The flooding went on for about 100 metres and the picnic area was badly flooded.

"Later we'll be checking to see how many trees survived."

Police had to close Styal Road after the river water flooded Twinnies car park and submerged a car up to its bonnet.

Friends chairman Colin Shepherd, of Grange Park Avenue, said: "It flooded where the Bollin meets the River Dean but I've not seen it flood across the road like that for years."

The weather caused further problems for emergency crews.

A fire crew from Wilmslow responded to reports of a lift shaft sparking due to water leaking onto electrics on Kennerleys Lane and another flood at Hawthorn Green flats on the same road.

A spokesman said: "We attended to pump out water as best we could, make sure the gas and electricity were safe and help move items to a higher level."
