SHE comes from a land down under....

A land where keen gardener Jenny Cox has many cherished memories from a happy childhood.

And to show just how proud she is of her roots, Jenny, of Alma Lane in Wilmslow, decided to plant a bit of Oz right here.

The 62-year-old grandmother of five has created a traditional 1950s Australian garden to go on view at Tatton’s RHS show.

Her work, called Jenny’s 1950s Backyard, is designed to show the simplicity of life at that time.

The retired All Hallows teacher, who has lived in Wilmslow for the past five years, says her deep-rooted love of nature and the country where she was born spurred her on to create the garden to go on display at the prestigious annual show at Tatton.

Jenny said: "It will be a small scaled down garden – just six metres by four metres. It’s a real authentic 1950s garden with a dunny, or toilet, outside.  There’s also a shed, corrugated iron fencing, a 1950s wash house and in the other half is my father’s workshop; he was a motor mechanic. The fronts of these buildings are open so that people looking at the show can see in and see what they were really like.  And just like a busy 1950s backyard, there will also be ornamental plants – such as as gladioli, geraniums and morning glory – some Australian native plants, and there’s a section for herbs and vegetables which we also grew back then.  The garden shows the simplicity of life at that time. There was no washing machine or inside toilet, and despite its size and all the things crammed in there, the children still found space to play."

Jenny, who has lived in Poynton, Stirling and Holmfirth before finally settling in Wilmslow, added: "When I went to the Tatton show last year, and after looking at the gardens, I thought I could do an interesting Australian garden and I later found out that it is the first time there has been one at Tatton."

The garden will be on show all week from July 22.

And Jenny, whose grandson Ben was diagnosed with diabetes, will be collecting donations for Diabetes UK at the event.
