ART teacher Nikki Parmenter is so fascinated by Indian Mythology she decided to create an entire exhibition on her favourite subject.

Eastern culture has always been a life-long interest for the mother-of-two, who has worked at Poynton High School for 16 years.

"I have always loved art from being very young. It has just grown from there," she said.

"It's great that I can spend all day at work doing something I also enjoy as a hobby."

The work in the exhibition is centred around Mandalas, which are Buddhist or Hindhu pictorial aids to worship. They are geometric images formed by circles and squares.

Nikki, 41, of Grebe Close, Poynton, has worked in different materials for her exhibition and said the pieces are always very colourful.

"They are very rich in colour," she said.

"I have even started a mythology project at school and I take in some of my work as examples for the children.

"My own children are also in my art class. James is the artistic one but Katie is more into music."

The exhibition is currently on show at the Central Art Gallery in Ashton-under-Lyne (until Saturday, October 5).

Nikki did her training at Manchester Polytechnic and had her first exhibition at Stockport in 1996.

Her Indian inspired work will be teamed up with the Indian miniaturist-based work of the Singh twins in an exhibition at Wigan's Drumcroon in 2004, this will be her largest show to date.

Three of the Mandalas will even be going to an exhibition in Heilbron, Germany in November.

Nikki added: "With mandalas there is something for everyone to get their teeth into."
