An artist famed for creating elaborate pumpkin designs have created a tribute to Armistice Day - this time using a water melon.

Darren Bannaghan’s extraordinary creations for Halloween have been an online hit.

Now the 46-year-old have taken his tools to a water melon to carve a First World War soldier paying tribute at the grave of a dead soldier, using the pink flesh of the melon to create a striking image of a poppy.

Darren, who lives in Macclesfield, has also carved a Spitfire flying above the moving scene and has carved the words ‘Lest We Forget’ in a final act of tribute to those who lost their lives in conflict.

Darren started carving pumpkins for family and friends five years ago, often displaying his creations outside his home on Wilton Crescent, the Weston, where he lives with wife Rachel. He has also worked with ceramics, wood and cake.

Darren’s water melon isn’t the first unusual and striking tribute created in Macclesfield. In 2014 a poppy was painted onto White Nancy as a tribute around Remembrance Day.

When are the Macclesfield Remembrance day parades and services?
