The iconic Cat and Fiddle pub looks set to reopen - but not necessarily as a pub.

The Buxton Road venue, which is the second highest pub in England, mysteriously closed to the public at the end of December.

Robinsons brewery, which owns the pub, would not reveal any details of what caused the closure. But now the firm are advertising for a new leaseholder through Wilmslow-based agent Meller Speakman.

It is promoted as “an excellent opportunity to lease a well known iconic building which has superb potential as a cafe, restaurant, tourist accommodation or tourist attraction”.

However, any changes from its use as a pub will need to go through Cheshire East Council’s licencing department.

The pub has residential accommodation above it, a number of other outbuildings and a large car park and adjoining land.

A spokesman for Robinsons said: “We are looking forward to re-opening the Cat & Fiddle. We have been marketing the pub for the last couple of months, and received a good level of interest.”

It is on the A537, a busy road popular with cyclists, motorcyclists and tourists, but once dubbed one of the most dangerous in Britain.
