A group of ‘urban artists’ who have skilfully captured the charm and quirks of Macclesfield are sharing their work with the community.

The ‘MaccSketchers’ are a group of illustrators who practise the art of on-location drawing together, choosing a different spot each week.

David Steeden, 62, said the group was set up in 2014 but decided now was the time to share their work in an exhibition at Jack Sevens Gallery, on Chestergate.

David, of Meadow Drive in Prestbury, said: “People will go somewhere and take a photo, but they won’t really appreciate what they are looking at. When you are sketching you get to know that place intimately and capture it in a different way.”

He added: “We all have our own style, but all the work in the exhibition is work done by the Macclesfield group, so it’s all very local.”

The MaccSketchers are part of the ‘Urban Sketchers’ movement, which encourages artists to go out sketching together and share their work on social media.

The Macclesfield group was started by David, Rosemary Bradshaw and Sally Henman after Sally put a notice in a window looking for people to sketch with.

David said: “A lot of people feel intimidated by going out on the streets and sketching on their own, but sketching as a group is a lot more comfortable.

“You can sit as near or as far apart as you like.”

The Macclesfield group has around 15 active members and more than 80 Facebook members.

The group meets on a Tuesday morning.

The exhibition will be at Jack Sevens Art Yard, Chestergate, and will run from November 17 until December 31. Visitors will be able to view and buy original artwork, prints and cards.

The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. The group is open to anyone who enjoys sketching and drawing, no matter what their level.
