Update: The amount raised in memory of Emily has increased to more than £1,200

The fiancé and step-daughter of a woman who died days before taking on a charity walk have raised £900 for the cause.

Emily Burgess, 34, who works at Macclesfield Hospital, was travelling towards Macclesfield when her car was in a collision with a bus on Congleton Road in Gawsworth.

The accident happened just days before Emily was due to take part in a charity challenge for the Alzheimer’s society.

Her partner Martin Gunther and his six-year-old daughter Zoe still completed the walk and the fundraisers have so far raised more than £900.

Martin, who lives in Sandbach, said: "As soon as I remember Emily had arranged to do this walk I thought 'we have to do it'. There was no question really and Zoe was keen to do it, in fact she wanted to do the longer walk so we could raise as much money as possible.

"It was at about £250 before the day and it's £900 now so I've no doubt it's trebled thanks to people paying tribute. We've had some anonymous donations from people too which is fantastic.

“Emily is greatly missed by all, and she felt strongly about this cause.”

Emily, who was from Sandbach, worked at Macclesfield Hospital as a medical secretary.

A spokesperson for her family said: “Emily Burgess née Bedford of Sandbach, was a caring, fun and much loved fiancée, step mother, sister, daughter and proud NHS employee.

“She is greatly missed by all who knew her. Her funeral will be held in Cambridge later this month.

“All donations to the Alzheimer’s society, a charity which was dear to her heart, are most gratefully received.”

An East Cheshire NHS Trust spokesperson also paid tribute to Emily, who has worked at the trust for more than two years.

He said: “She was a very popular and well-respected member of her team and had a quiet, kind and caring disposition.

“She will be greatly missed by her colleagues who would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to Emily’s family.”

Emily died on October 1 when her blue Ford Focus crashed with the bus.

Emergency services, including a fire engine from Macclesfield, arrived at the scene but she could not be saved and died at the scene.

The collision on the A536 Congleton Road happened at 7.45am.

Anyone with information on the collision can contact Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 156 of 1 October.
