Two people were cut from their vehicles and taken to hospital after a three-car smash.

The man and woman became trapped when the their cars tipped onto their sides during the accident, in Gawsworth, yesterday afternoon.

The crash at the junction of Congleton Road and Church Lane involved three cars - a Silver Ford KA, Blue Toyota Avensis and a Black Ford Fusion.

The woman taken to hospital was the 77 year old driver of the Ford KA. She stayed in hospital overnight.

A fire engine from Macclesfield and one from Congleton attended the scene as well as police and the ambulance service, at around 3.20pm.

Crews released the man and woman from their cars and handed them into the care of paramedics who took them to Macclesfield Hosptial.

Road closures were put in place causing delays in the area.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said: “Two patients were taken to Macclesfield Hospital. They were both walking wounded and had no serious injuries.”
