The daughter of a dementia patient who enjoys stays at Hollins View says he still has nowhere to go when it closes.

Hollins View care home, on Clarke Terrace, provides respite for patients with dementia in Macclesfield.

But despite a hard-fought campaign by the Express and campaign groups, it will close on January 2 after the council decided that respite care for dementia sufferers should be provided by the independent sector instead, including private care homes.

Jean Bennett, whose dad Clifford Ogden, 96, regularly stays at Hollins View, says she has no idea where, or if, her dad will be given respite care in Macclesfield after his final visit to Hollins View in November.

Jean, 70, of Greenside, said: “Dad loves going to Hollins View. He knows the place and enjoys playing piano there. It’s like a holiday for him. He will enjoy his week in November but that will be his last visit. It’s very sad.”

Jean added: “He keeps asking me what will happen. He thinks it’s moving to another centre, but I have to tell him it won’t be there at all anymore. I’ve had no guarantees that there are no pre-bookable respite beds in Macclesfield.”

Cheshire East has said that everyone who needs care will have it after the centre closes but will not guarantee that this will be in Macclesfield.

And 10 intermediate care beds at Hollins View - for patients leaving hospital but not yet well enough to go home - have already been closed.

A spokesman for East Cheshire NHS Trust which ran the beds said: “It’s important to note that intermediate care has always been delivered by East Cheshire NHS Trust from a variety of locations in eastern Cheshire on a flexible basis according to demand.

“Following the cessation of bed based services from Hollins View there are now 78 beds provided from Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Congleton and Knutsford.

“Eastern Cheshire CCG is in the process of procuring additional beds to support increased need over the winter.

“It is important to note that initiatives are already taking place in eastern Cheshire aimed at providing more care in patients’ own homes wherever this safe and appropriate.”
