A couple have described the dramatic moment their cruise ship rescued more than 100 migrants.
Ian and Denise Rankin, from Prestbury, were on board the Island Princess near the Greek island of Zakinthos on Saturday when there was a mayday call from a vessel.
The migrants issued a distress call after the yacht they were travelling in lost power.
The Greek coastguard used a lifeboat to transfer 117 men, women and children, believed to have come from Syria, to the cruise ship.
They were given food, water and first aid treatment before being dropped off on the Greek mainland on Sunday.
Denise, who with husband Ian en route to Istanbul, said: “Our cruise ship diverted and came alongside a small yacht.
“It was sitting very low in the water and yawing. It started to take on water.
“Our ship rescued 117 Syrian refugees.
“There was at least one pregnant lady and children aged between two and 10.
“There were probably about 30 children.
“They were provided with beds, food, water and first aid.
“The crew on our ship were amazing.
“It is all very sad but I am glad they were rescued.”
