A community is celebrating winning nearly £50,000 for a new playground.

Children in Sutton are set to get new play equipment at Cop Meadow park after a successful bid for grant funding by parish leaders.

Funding body WREN has awarded £48,690 for the project from its Community Action Fund.

It comes after the parish council applied for the funding because the current playground is in a poor state of repair.

At Cop Meadow there is a field with football pitch and fenced-off play area but its poor state means the play equipment is not well-used by local children.

So parish councillors joined with other local partners to bid for funds from WREN and are pleased to announce they were successful.

Sarah Giller, parish clerk at Sutton Parish Council, said the facility will make a huge difference to people in the area.

She said: “This project will provide a real boost to the children of Sutton and surrounding area.

“It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded this money to the Parish Council, Cheshire East Council and Ansa Environmental Services Ltd and we are really looking forward to our project taking shape over the coming months.”

The current swings, roundabout and climbing frame will be replaced by a new set of equipment and there will be new surfacing on the ground.

The parish council will also pay for better draining of the field. There is a problem with water logging in pools on the field so a new main drain and pipes across the field will be fitted to take water away.

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects which benefit people living within 10 miles of a landfill site managed by FCC Environment, a waste management company.

Richard Smith, WREN’s grant manager for Cheshire, said: “We’re delighted to support the Cop Meadow play area project and pleased our funding will provide such a fantastic facility for children and young families across Sutton.

“WREN is always happy to consider applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”

The parish also bid for funding for the Lyme Green park but this was not successful.
