Children have been warned they are risking their lives playing on a derelict mill known as ‘The bomb house’.

Police and community leaders have become increasingly concerned over the numbers of children exploring Lower Hayes Mill, home to the former Barracks Fabrics, on Black Lane, Macclesfield.

The site, known to children as ‘the bomb house’, has been a derelict eyesore since 2004 when fire ripped through the buildings. It was targeted again by arsonists in 2013.

PCSOs have been visiting schools to warn children of the dangers of trespassing on the land and have spoken to the owners of the site about increasing security.

Inspector Steve Griffiths, from Macclesfield Police, said: “It is a derelict site and kids being kids are clearly seeking adventure. However as with all derelict sites, it is extremely dangerous. I believe a child fell and broke their arm last year on site.

“We would urge children not to play on such sites due to the danger involved and for parents to take responsibility and know where their children are.”

Macclesfield MP David Rutley also expressed concern.

He said: “It’s very disturbing to hear that youngsters are spending time in the old Barracks mill site. It’s a derelict site and has all the dangers associated with that type of place. I would encourage all parents to keep their children from going there and letting their children know about the dangers involved.”

Coun Steve Carter has been doing his bit to spread the word to parents.

He said: “Children have bee using it as a play ground. This is a serious accident waiting to happen. The local schools have been informed and a few children have been identified and parents contacted. If you have children can you warn them about the dangers of this site. We do not want a tragic accident.

“It is the responsibility of the site owners to ensure that it is safe. The police have spoken to the people acting for the owners and they are increasing security on the site and improving the fencing.”

The seven hectare site has been the focus of several failed development bids including for a replacement Tesco’s supermarket in 2012.

There is fresh hope for the site after outline plans for three retail units were submitted by Castlemore Securities Limited.
