AN 'eyesore' office block is to make way for new town houses.

Cheshire East Council's northern area planning committee gave the green light to the scheme, which will see the demolition of the five-storey building known as The Towers on Park Green.

In its place developer Welbeck Land will build 14 townhouses.

The site has a rich historical past. In the 1960s a brewery built in 1874 was demolished to make way for the current office block which has sat empty for more than a decade.

The most recent planning application - flats for the elderly and a cafe - was refused last year.

Speaking at the meeting at Macclesfield Town Hall on Wednesday, November 20, Coun Ken Edwards told the planning committee the scheme was welcome.

He said: "A number of applications have come before. This is by far the most positive. I won't say miraculous but this is extremely welcome."

Coun Hilda Gaddum agreed.

She said: "It is splendid. It could be an asset and get rid of eyesore."

But the development didn't meet everyone's approval with concerns from neighbours, the Macclesfield Civic Society and the Macclesfield Guild and Chamber of Trade about the height of the homes and the design style.
