CYCLING: ROGER Wrenn took a top ten placing in the Veterans National 25 miles Championships on Sunday.

The event was held on the A49 Whitchurch to Shrewsbury Road and featured a long steep drag close to finish which kept times down.

Wrenn finished in one hour 29 seconds to take 10th place and to be part of the winning team from the North West.

On Saturday evening, Claire Logan, Steve Jackson and Warren Jackson all competed in the Westmead 25 at Chelford.

This was the second event of the week for Steve who had ridden the Anfield 100 mile event on Bank Holiday Monday, recording 4.46.57 on a difficult course on a windy day.

The club’s 10-mile series continues to be hard fought with Steve Burke and Mike Cuming tying for first place this week in 21.52.

Adam Bailey was 15 seconds back and Andy Patterson a further minute adrift. Simon Ward, Calum O’Connor, Eelco Doctor, who was making a rare appearance in a time trial, and Rob Foster were also inside 24 minutes.

Jenn O’Connor was again the fastest lady and was one of the few to improve on last week’s time time of 23.41.

Another rider to improved on the previous week was Carl Taylor who finished in 26.40.

Cuming leads the overall series from Steve Burke with Claire Harbottle pulling ahead in the handicap section from Dave Harbottle and Mike Cuming.

Several Wheelers including Dave Higham, Graham Travis, Nick Cavill, Julia Norman, Tom Dunkley, Neil Gowan and Mark Monaghan competed in the annual Polka Dot Challenge.

The ride took place over 100 miles and some of the most demanding climbs in the Peak District including the 25 per cent gradient of Winnats Pass. The weather was poor with heavy rain for most of the ride leading many riders to abandon.

First Wheeler home was Dave Higham in five hours 53 minutes, although he was a few minutes behind honoury Wheeler Chris Edmondson.
