HOWZAT for a sporting success story?

Members of the girls' kwik cricket team at Upton Priory Junior School were hit for six with the news they had been selected to represent Macclesfield in the Cheshire Youth Games.

Their level of performance in the flourishing sport - played with a plastic bat and ball - left the opposition stumped in a competition against the other primary schools in the borough.

Victory gave the Year Six pupils the chance to pit their wits against the best teams from across the county in the Games at Warrington Cricket Club on June 24.

Coach, Andrew Woof, said the school only began playing the sport, where teams start with 200 runs before a ball is bowled, last Easter.

He added: "Once the football season finishes we start playing kwik cricket instead and the girls and boys are really into it now - they all play it at lunchtimes as well.

"It's a pretty big achievement because they will now represent Macclesfield against the best teams in all the different districts of Cheshire.

"All the girls are pretty good and there's not really any weak links in the team."

Kwik cricket comprises of eight players and eight overs, with teams divided into four pairs and each batting for two overs.

Every member of the fielding side has to bowl one over each - underarm or overarm - and every time a batsman is out, five runs come off the total and the batters swap places.

If a wide or a no-ball is bowled, the batting side is awarded an extra two runs.

The victorious Upton Priory team is captained by Ellie Farrer, and the other players are: Corin Jenion, Ashleigh Carelen, Lily Tarnee, Sarah Holmes, Chloe Machin, Gabs Martin, Amy Redfern, Amaya Carruthers and Katie Howlen.
