Langley lost by two wickets

LANGLEY are struggling to regain their early season form after losing out in a thrilling finish against Wilmslow Wayfarers in the Cheshire Building Society Cricket Alliance.

Needing one run off the final ball of the match, Wayfarers pulled it off to defeat the host side by two wickets.

Langley skipper Mannion had won the toss and elected to bat first on a firm, fast wicket.

Laughton was the first to go, bowled playing across the line for 12.

Pattison and Hollinshead took the score to 49 before veteran Hollinshead was caught and bowled for 11.

Johnson soon followed, caught in the covers for six, as Langley were educed to 69-3 off 21 overs.

Stevens then came to the crease but had to retire with a leg injury, and when Mannion (10) and Pattison (54) were dismissed Langley were in trouble at 130-6.

However, with the aid of a runner, Stevens returned and with Frame set about the attack, both hitting the ball well, adding 86 in just 10 overs.

Stevens was run out for a splendid 65, including four sixes, and Frame soon followed for a cultured 35 as Langley declared on 230-8 off 46 overs.

In response Langley picked up a quick wicket when Frame bowled Akhtar for 14, but on an excellent wicket the Wayfarers batsman proved hard to dismiss as Ed Homer and Caulfield dug in.

The pair took the score to 66 before Berzins caught and bowled Caulfield for 24.

Rick Homer joined his brother and both began to strike the ball well, adding 54 in 12 overs, until Hollinshead bowled Rick Homer for 21.

Skipper Unsworth attempted to propel the score but hit the ball to Frame at mid wicket who took a good catch in the deep as the visitors reached 130-4.

Brannigan (17) and Baldwin (14) assisted Homer as Wayfarers sensed victory.

With 10 needed off two overs Pattison picked up two wickets, which left nine needed in the final over.

Homer then hit a crucial six which left one needed off the final ball which the visitors scrambled as Langley were defeated by 2 wickets.

For the home team Hollinshead took 3-75 off 17 overs, Pattison 2-38 off 9 overs, Frame 1-24 off 8 overs and Berzins 1-41 off 7 overs.

After a good start to the season Langley are struggling to find their early season form.

Langley travel to Saughall this weekend.
